General information about Mauritius

Good to know

Journey:

There are various airlines that fly to Mauritius. Tip: Condor regularly offers non-stop flights starting from 199 Euros per person to Mauritius… We happily inform you about the current costs of flights in our Surf-Fewo.com Newsletter.

Entering Mauritius:
Your travelling passport must be valid at least 6 months ahead. At the arrival there is an entry questionnaire to be filled in. (This is mostly already handed out on the plane)
Entering Mauritius you should have money with you proving that you can afford your holiday – the best is to present the ticket back home.

Currency
The best exchange rate is available in the country if you change your money directly at the exit of the airport. It is not to be recommended to carry too much cash with you. You can nearly everywhere pay with credit cards (supermarkets etc.)
Autotellers are in Le Morne (in the shopping center of the hotels) and in Tamarin at the Leader Price Supermarket.
There you can get money with an EC-card if it has the Maestro sign. These autotellers belong to Barclays so that for customers of the Deutsche Bank the transfer is for free.

Vaccinations:
Nothing is laid down but you should as a doctor.

Health
The typical diarrhoea is very rare on Mauritius. You should not drink the water from the tap and prepare your meals with water from the supermarket (5 liter bottles).
Being so near the equator you should necessarily use sunblock with a high filter according to the type of your skin.
As Mauritius is nearly completely surrounded by a reef which keeps away high waves and makes snorkelling in the beautiful lagoons possible, you should wear bathing slippers as a protection from the sharp corrals.

Catering – Restaurants (region Le Morne and La Gaulette):

You can easily prepare meals on your own on Mauritius as the supermarkets are well equipped. You can buy anything there that you find in our European regions. There is a little supermarket at the main street of La Gaulette which has a lot of things. If you want to buy food for a few days, go to Tamarin which is nearby. There are two big supermarkets (London and Leader Price).
There are a lot of good restaurants in La Gaulette, Flic en Flac just as well in Tamarin. If you have special desires then as the local staff at the office, they have special tips for your taste.

Rent a car:
Cars drive on the left on Mauritius. You need a few days to get used to this unusual habit.
Natives can at times have a special style of driving. It can happen that the oncoming traffic uses the middle of the lane (mostly trucks and busses). As an alternative you can rent a taxi driver for a day to look at all the sights. The price is about 60 Euros a day including a guide.

Public transport:
There is a regular public transport with older busses on the island.

Mobile phones – communication:

You should think twice about using a mobile phone on Mauritius if you want to avoid unpleasant surprises later at home. According to your contract one minute costs about 3-4 Euros! You should ask your provider.
If you want to send an e-mail you can go to our local office. Guests of Surf-fewo.com can use the internet for free. There are two pc in the office.
